Networks

‘The problem with communication… is the illusion that it has been accomplished.’

(George Bernard Shaw)

One would assume that a netowrk, in effect a series of computers connected to one another, would offer only a limited number of functions. That one could share data, disribute information and so on. Yet with the rise of network non-places, there in lies an evolution, a cultural phenomenon which has slowly been encouraging a change in the way one would percieve the internet and indeed any network. The rise of concepts such as ‘myspace.com’ and ‘facebook.com’ have brought with them a trend, a fashion if you will. That an individual may feel so insecure in thier being that, it is found neccessary to describe, if not validate ones self in these non-places. The influence of being webwize has extended itself, through the need to be digital. To exists as flesh and bone, as well as inprint ones ‘digital representation’ in a non-place. One looses the concept and meaning of communication, in expressing a feeling, or statement in a public arena, for all to see. This may perhaps be for a greater sense of importance, as a statement of self. However it is percieved as both a new media and sociological development. It may well be that of a passing trend, or it may be the start of something bigger. The need to fulfil ones wants and desires as though it were a exhibition to others. This concept may be foriegn to some, but think about it the next time you are reading a posting, or a comment in a public space, ask yourslef, why is this here?, why would one choose such an open arena to display a message or pose a question? As a concept it intruges me, Your views may be posted below in the irony of this illusion.

Nike +

I recently joined the ranks of the ‘i’ generation by puchasing an ipod nano, primarily because i like to listen to music on the go. As an MP3 player it connects perfectly with my mac, and as the saying goes ‘it just works’. The reason for this boastful outtake is that along with my recent purchase i also decided to go a little further and buy the ‘Nike +’ kit. I have to say, this is one of the most impressive innovations i have seen in a long time;

To those of you who aren’t familiar, the video above describes how the system works. Pretty clever in itself, however the technology goes one step further in taking the collated data and uploading to nike.com, to give full graphical representations and debriefings from a run. It then enables the information to be used to set goals for pace and distance over a time duration of the users choice. The information will keep the user updated on overall progress, as well as enabling other users within the Nike community to view your achievements. If you so wish Nike will then pair athletes with similar fitness levels and fitness routines to compete against each other to achieve specified goals. So i myself could train against a foreign counterpart whom i may never meet, but be in essence a training buddy.

This technology although recently creating a stir with its ’security issues’ really has come a long way in innovating not only the way we listen to music, but also the way people can integrate technology and indeed networks into everyday life.

WWW

As part of my reseach into developing an essay topic I have begun looking at the diversity of networks, with regard to net. art and visual spaces. I came accross this, not sure how relevant it will be to what i do, but found it very interesting to conceptualise a workpiece which purposely contradicts the intended use of web-sites always packed with information. The images left on screen still resinate an identity, but one which has been manipulated to a new meaning;

As we all know, Duncan is prone to enjoy the occasional Photoshop challenge. However, if you find using the software to greatest effect difficult, hit good-tutorials. Really useful if you wanna brush up on techniques and gain ideas about anything from photography to designing. Enjoy

Anyone Lost?

If anybody enjoys the work of J.J. Abrams, you will appreciate the sheer provocative nature of this well marketed trailer for the fist season of ‘Lost’.

Although quite dated now, I still find it utterly incredulous in its power to appeal.
