50 Beautiful CSS-Based Web-Designs in 2006

For all the guys doing web…

Found this website that features 50 beautiful CSS based web designs from 2006, some of them look pretty cool although some of the comments at the bottom say that some of the sites lack accessibility (doh!).

May provide some inspiration for some of us however :)

Twlight Competition Photo.

For this competition: http://www.vam.ac.uk/collections/photography/twilight/competition/index.php

I entered this image, cutting it fine on the last day.

I wish I had more time really, didn’t have long. I think it’s ok, I quite like it.

Twilight: Photography in the Magic Hour

“At twilight, the colour and quality of light go through rapid and dramatic changes. For photographers, who are highly attuned to the subtleties of light, this is a particularly significant and poignant time. The artists in the exhibition have all made work that focuses on the end of the day and investigates twilight, as distinct from night.”

I know its late posting this, as it ends on the 17th December

However I’m interesting by this, and hope to go there tomorrow.

Show and tell

I want to post a page here on the weblog which has links to as many students webpages as possible so that all of your work becomes more visible, so that we get to show what our students are doing, how good and diverse it is. If you want a link, could you send me an email (if you don’t know my email look it up) with the following info to your own website, weblog, youtube space, myspace space or any other webpresence that shows some of your work in the following format:

Your year – your full name – your url

Try to keep to the format as I could receive many emails for this and want to keep it as much a cut and paste job as possible.

Joshua Davis exhibition

Joshua Davis is having an exhibition in the Royal Academy of Art, Holland:

Over the past decade, Joshua Davis has established himself as one of the leading forces in the creative field. Using the computer in intuitive and innovative ways, he has set the standard for generations of artists to come.

One of Joshua Davis’ outstanding qualities is his ability to guide any audience through his creative process in an exciting and dynamic presentation. You don’t have to be an expert in the realm of fancy software to enjoy this hugely entertaining ride. With Davis at the wheel, there’s little room for academic ivory towers, and why should there be?

On the other hand, if you’re into graphic design, and, more specifically, randomly generated images in Flash, you should drop everything and join us at The Hague’s KABK! This is an opportunity you really don’t want to miss out on…

The workshop is freely accessible, with a limit of 160 participants. And if you’re not able to get there in time, you can always check out the grand opening at TAG Headquarters later that afternoon.

Power of the edit

Looking at some of the video courses experimental video work today which seemed to all draw heavily on the idea of the power of the edit and how this is something which can really be played with since the arrival of digital editing techniques reminded me of a few things (very much off the top of my head) which play with this in some shape or form.

Timber by Coldcut is the reverse of a usual music video (i.e. video edited to audio) in that the editing of the video creates the audio track. Some of this looks quite kitsch these days but at the time (early 90’s) this allowed the artists to create music / music videos all at once and give them the opportunity to also use it in a club scenario, live.

Natural Rhythm, more Coldcut this time with Hexstatic.

Koyaanisqatsi (a short extract above) uses editing to drive home the idea of film making as composing with rhythm, movement etc. (Koyaanisqatsi is one of aseries of three films of which we have two in the library).

A sample from the film Bodysong, a little similar to Koyaanisqatsi but focused on life as a. The score was composed by Radiohead’s guitarist Jonny Greenwood.

Completely unrelated but here’s a whole mess of music videos from the Ninjatune label which I stumbled across.
