Electronic paper

Fujitsu has developed a new electronic paper technology that can hold vibrant color images without electricity. The thin, flexible paper is more vivid than an LCD, requires only small amounts of electricity to update, and could be commercialized as soon as 2007, Fujitsu says.

vlogs
A vlog is a video weblog. Based on recent success in year 2 video it might be an idea for some of the video students to start their own personal vlogs or at least post their work here. It’s so easy to have a video camera with you these days, and to make videos when you have an idea on the go – small experiments with colour / movement / form / composition etc. which can easily be posted online, sort of using a blog like a motion sketchbook.
To get an idea of what I mean have a look at some of these vlogs:
Scenes of A Provincial Life
DVblog
Reasonable Illusions
and search for more here:
So starting using your mobile phones for more than calls or texts, your stills camera video function or if you feeling adventurous try ebay for cameras like these:

Remote control car with camera
Here’s a page with somebody doing interesting things with a robosapien and wireless camera.

Noah K. Everyday
“Noah takes a photo of himself every day for 6 years
I find this piece very interesting. It shows 6 years of someones life in about 5 minutes, you can see him clearly age infront of you and how his life is changing with different places the pictures are taken from. You can tell if he has moved house or gone travelling by the sudden change of background.
I have seen other videos that do this concept, this is the best one I’ve seen because the others have not been for as long (time period) and the background is a white. I feel it’s more interesting to see the surroundings change as well as they do.

Google Code Search

Not sure if this is old news or whatnot. Just reading my .net magazine and had a small article about Google launching a search engine which searches code e.g. Java, PHP, Ajax etc…
Not really used it yet, it could be interesting to use.
It’s still in the Google Labs, so beta version.
Also like the /* Code Search */ part on the logo, little things.

Wii Pre-Order Line and PS3 Line
A quick scan for a pre-order line for the Wii in Japan, bearing in mind that all they are doing is queuing up to put down their name for a pre-order so they can get a Wii on launch day! (Also notice how many people are passing the time by playing on their DS).
Also a quick video of the line for the Playstation 3 which went on sale in Japan on the 11th of November. News reports suggest that a lot of people went home unhappy as (big shock!) the PS3 was in short supply.

Net.art

Just wrote a post on my own research weblog about net.art which may be of interest to year 3 after Fridays lecture on the topic. The post deals with a new publication on the topic (in our library) but has a few links to net.arts already mentioned and others not mentioned. Feel free to comment on the weblog but please have a look around at some of the others posts to get a feel in advance for the lecture in two weeks time.

Director Evaluation
Garrett,
With regards to the evaluation for the Director assignment. Should we be discussing what we have done in our sketch book? As I’m thinking the evalution should be in some form of logical order of progression from initial designer and ideas, to research and sketchbook, to development of CD, then evaluating the project and strengths and weaknesses etc.
Thought I would post this here rather than email as others may have a similar question.
Thanks
James

Saul Bass et al
Some title sequences stumbled on by a friend of mine created by Saul Bass, Maurice Binder, Pablo Ferro, Dan Perri, Kyle Cooper, André François, Sandy Dvore, Art Clokey and Imaginary Forces. Saul Bass created some of the best title sequences for movies in the 50’s / 60’s / 70’s and is the most important figure here – have a look. The webpage is in French but scroll down to see the videos.
