RFID – Never lose Lugage again
Here’s an article at wired about RFID tags potentially being used to track lugage at airports. This is one of those technologies we (year 3 theory lecture) discussed last week concerning the internet of things. Its also mentioned in that pdf I put on blackboard that you should read before friday and connects with the Bruce Sterling’s ITC lecture which we listened in the lecture where he talked about googling your shoes in the morning when you can’t find them.

Pfizers commission
Last year I got commissioned by Pfizers (through uni) to take some photographs of around Thanet to be displayed at the Pfizers site. Last week I finally got an email to say that they had got round to having them printed and framed. So today I went to Pfizers to take a look at my work on display. And I must admit, as soon as I saw them on the walls over two corridors, I couldnt help but grin
it was amazing to see my photos being displayed by such a massive company.
I wasnt allowed to take any photographs of my pics on the wall with my own camera (although i managed to get passed security and into the site for half an hour with a big SLR before anyone realised i had a camera with me haha.. i mangaed to breach security in one of the biggest security conscious places ever hehe) however the woman I was meeting allowed me to take some sneaky pics on her camera, which she will send to me and when i get them will post on here.
The pics have aroused quite alot of interest, they said and that they are running a competition to see who can identify all of the places before they put the titles up. I need to write a bio for them, no idea what to put though, so any suggestions would be great. They also said that some a few people had asked if they can buy copies of some of the photos which is awesome so not only are they being displayed, but I might make some more money from it!! Yay
Here are a few of the pics that I took. They are displaying 16 in total :

The Conceptual Crisis of Private Property as a Crisis in Practice

This is mainly for Philip regarding representations of representations, plays with image and code and their shared commonalities in the digital domain (the fact that binary language describes both) but is relevant to anyone interested in net.art or possibly researching it for your year 3 essay.
Anyway have a look at this work The Conceptual Crisis of Private Property as a Crisis in Practice – A Screenshot by Robert Luxemburg. You’ll need to read the text (ahhhh) to grasp the idea, but it’s well worth it. A supremely element work of net.art.

WWW

As part of my reseach into developing an essay topic I have begun looking at the diversity of networks, with regard to net. art and visual spaces. I came accross this, not sure how relevant it will be to what i do, but found it very interesting to conceptualise a workpiece which purposely contradicts the intended use of web-sites always packed with information. The images left on screen still resinate an identity, but one which has been manipulated to a new meaning;

The Google Maps pushpin meets real life.
Aram Bartholl of Germany brings the default Google Maps pin marker to life in this cool little video clip he created. The project, titled “Map” zooms you down into a real location in Berlin as one of these map markers is constructed with plywood and fabric. Aram explains that “The size of the rebuilt red Marker in reality corresponds to the size of a marker in the web interface in max zoom factor of the map.”

For Andy – MTB Websites
Andy, I know your doing a website for an MTB shop, just been looking at a few websites mainly the manufacturers sites but I feel they really capture the essence of mountain biking in the style of their websites.
I think if I was doing a site for a MTB shop I’d consider looking at these sites and seeing what I could adapt into my own website.

I in particular like the Marin website (not only because I have a Marin
), although it is quite graphically intensive.

Brush up
As we all know, Duncan is prone to enjoy the occasional Photoshop challenge. However, if you find using the software to greatest effect difficult, hit good-tutorials. Really useful if you wanna brush up on techniques and gain ideas about anything from photography to designing. Enjoy

7up Pac Man Advert (1982)
A video i found whilst researching my current assignment.
Its amazing to see the computer graphics from the time and how much something like this would have cost to produce and get the licence for. Maybe in years to come with the current boom of video game consoles we’ll see more collaborations between snack companys and video games icons.
